Inspired.

Painting on Trump yard signs… Mary Mihelic’s first yard sign was a 96-inch-long Trump yard sign is inspired by the Women’s March.

Portrait of Simone Biles

Imagery shows Simon Biles on the Olympic medal stand. Silver and bronze medal winners are bowing down to her (which they did during the ceremony). The use of Mexican blankets and shoelaces have become part of this artist’s visual vocabulary. The blankets symbolize the shoes Mexicans wear when they climb over the wall at the U.S. border. (The Mexicans wrap their shoes in coverings made from Mexican blankets –and tie them on – so when they step on the sanded area in front of the fence on the U.S. side, their footprints are hidden from border patrol.)  The artwork reflects on Trump’s recent comment that illegal immigrants are taking black jobs. It’s about the state of politics today, global feminism, and more.

Obstruzione

Imagery shows U.S. Supreme Court justice Samuel Alito’s wife, Martha-Ann Alito upside down. The art references her flying the American flag upside down outside their house and also flying The Appeal to Heaven flag outside their beach house (that flag features a Pine Tree). The upside-down flag has become a symbol of the pro-Trump “stop the steal” movement and efforts to keep the former president in power. Some Trump supporters carried upside-down flags at the Jan. 6 riot. Because of that association, Democrats have called for Martha’s husband to recuse himself from cases related to Trump and the insurrection. He refuses to do so.

This artwork shows insurrectionists climbing the U.S. Capitol, an insurrectionist using bear spray, and a dead police officer. The shoes on the insurrectionists symbolize the shoes Mexicans wear when they climb over the wall at the U.S. border. (The Mexicans wrap their shoes in coverings made from Mexican blankets – so when they step on the sanded area in front of the fence on the U.S. side, their footprints are hidden from border patrol.) It reflects on the irony of the insurrectionists climbing the Capitol building and illegally entering it. The title is in Italian and means obstruction, since Martha-Ann said she dreams of making her own flag and titling it Vergogna (which means shame in Italian). The Trump sign is especially apt, since Martha-Ann has gotten in disputes with her neighbors over political yard signs.

Women’s March

DETAIL FROM WOMEN’s MARCH SIGN:

“The bus normally causes a stir wherever it goes.  On the road, the artists regularly get Trump supporters taking selfies with the bus and Hillary supporters calling them Nazis – until each group realizes what the bus is actually saying.”

Not to be dementiaed with Marla

Imagery shows E. jean Carroll on a Trump yard sign. E. Jean Carroll was awarded $5 million after a jury found Trump guilty of sexually abusing her. In 1986, Trump sexually assaulted E. Jean Carroll inside a women’s dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman, a luxury clothing boutique.  In his defense, Trump argued that he would never do that, because E. Jean Carroll “wasn’t his type.” Only when shown a photo of E. Jean Carroll and asked who that person was, Trump said it was his ex-wife Marla Maples. In addition, Carroll was awarded $83 million dollars from Trump for defamation damages.
